Arab Health 2015 Strengthens the Fight against NCDs in the Middle East
By 2030, almost 80 percent of deaths in the Middle East will result from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) or ‘lifestyle’ diseases, such as cardiovascular disease (CVD) or cancer.1 The high prevalence of unhealthy diets, smoking and lack of physical exercise, a direct result of urbanization and rising per capita income, are big contributing factors.2
The annual Arab Health[1] conference in Dubai gathers healthcare representatives from across the Middle East to find ways to resolve the region’s most pressing healthcare issues, all the while remaining focused on being a leader in technology and innovation. Moreover, the scale and rate of innovation is set to significantly transform the sector in the next 10 years as Healthcare continues to industrialize.
GE Healthcare has over 40 years of history in pioneering innovation in the Middle East and North Africa; it was the first healthcare provider to produce the world’s first X-ray fluoroscopy scan, the first commercially available mammography technology, the world’s first high definition CT scanner, and, more recently, the first to make available a portable 4D fetal ultrasound.
With over 1,000 employees and 5,000 healthcare professionals trained in the Middle East, GE’s presence is as important to healthcare in the MENAT region as ever before.
For instance, at the Hajj pilgrimage of 2010, 20 GE engineers provided 24 hour assistance to 15 hospitals and medical centers near Mecca, overseeing the health of more than 4 million pilgrims. Over in the West Bank, GE was the first to install MRI technology, supporting 2.7 million people at the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Health hospitals.
GE will continue this tradition at Arab Health by launching several of its latest technologies developed to improve healthcare in the Middle East.
